Ricardo Smith Santibanez [Spanish: Santibáñez] (3 April 1911 – 1 August 2021) was a Chilean supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023. He was the oldest known living man in Chile since the death of Manuel Benavente Sanhueza on 21 March 2021 until his death.
Biography[]
Ricardo Smith Santibanez was born in Temuco, Cautin, Chile on 3 April 1911 to a Canadian father and a Chilean mother. His paternal grandfather, George Smith (1789–1880) was born in Cornwall, England and died in Canada. His father, Philip Thomas Smith (1844–1924) was born in Canada and immigrated to Chile with his family in the early 1880s to start a lumber mill business due to the lack of jobs in Canada. He later married a second time to Margarita Santibanez Sanchez (1890–1965), producing their son, Ricardo, who was born when Philip was 67.
Smith Santibanez worked as an accountant and married Mariana Partarrieu Navarrete (1912–2009). He had three children: Ricardo Smith Partarrieu, Sergio Renato Smith Partarrieu and Stanley Smith Partarrieu.
On 8 February 2021, at the age of 109, he received the COVID-19 vaccine, making him one of the oldest people to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
On 3 April 2021, he celebrated his 110th birthday, making him only the third known Chilean man to reach this age.
His cousin, Jane Bray Smith (31 May 1855 – 16 October 1961) who lived to be 106.
Ricardo Smith Santibanez died in Concepcion, Bio Bio Region, Chile on 1 August 2021 at the age of 110 years, 120 days.
