Robert Freeman, Jr. (22 December 1879 – 24 December 1990) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of his death, he was the oldest living man in the world. He also was the oldest man ever from Missouri until his age was surpassed by Ardra King.
Biography[]
Robert Freeman was born in Como, Mississippi, USA on 22 December 1879. His parents were Robert Freeman, Sr. and Lucinda Freeman. His father died of consumption when he was young and he was reared his stepfather, George Stewart. He had nine siblings.
Freeman worked most of his life as a laborer in Hayti, Missouri. Freeman and his wife Mattie (born c.1890) worked at Pascola for five years. They were employed by the Tackleberry Plantation and chopped cotton there.
Freeman had been married four times and had three children: Lillie Mae Jefferson, Iola Freeman, and John Henry Freeman. He moved to Prairie View Rest Home in Lewistown, Missouri in 1976.
Following the death of 110-year-old Henri Perignon of France on 18 June 1990, he became the world's oldest living man.
On Freeman's 111th birthday in 1990, he still had one living sister, Luvenia (born 15 December 1900), who lived in Mississippi. Freeman attributed his longevity to love of life, man and God.
Robert Freeman died in Lewistown, Missouri, USA on 24 December 1990 at the age of 111 years, 2 days, two days after his 111th birthday.
