Rochelle Pope (née Jackson; 9 March 1908 – 14 April 2018) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group.
Biography
Pope was born in Mingo, Sampson County, North Carolina, USA, on 9 March 1908. Her parents were Buckner and Mittie Jackson. During the 1920s, she attended Pineland School for Girls, and later earned her education degree from what was then East Carolina Teachers College in Greenville.
Pope worked as a teacher, first in Sampson County, then in Harnett County, where she taught children in grades fourth to seven. She also served as principal during her tenure at Long Branch School. She married Claude E. Pope in the 1930s, and had four children, two of whom were still living at the time of her death.
In her later life, Pope was blind and relied on a wheelchair to get around after hip surgery in her mid-100s, but was reported to be in good spirits. She died in Dunn, North Carolina, on 14 April 2018 at the age of 110 years, 36 days. At the time of her death, she had 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
