Romana de Sousa Marques (22 July 1908 – 15 June 2019) was a Portuguese supercentenarian whose age has been validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of death, she was the oldest known living person from Portugal.

Biography[]

Marques was born in Faniqueira, Batalha, Leiria District, Portugal on 22 July 1908. She allegedly witnessed the Miracle of the Sun on 13 October 1917. Her son, Nuno Alvares Pereira, died during the Portuguese Colonial War in 1974. In 1998, she moved to the nursing home of "Lar Emanuel" in Leiria. At the end of her life, Marques lived in Gandara dos Olivais, Leiria.

She became the oldest known living person from Portugal, following the death of 111-year-old Joaquina Martins on 14 October 2018.

Marques died in Marrazes, Leiria, Portugal on 15 June 2019 at the age of 110 years, 328 days.
