Romeo Dit Bebe Boisvert Tremblay [French: Roméo ... Bébé] (30 March 1892 – 17 December 2001) was a Canadian centenarian who was the oldest living man in Canada and the third-oldest man ever from Quebec at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Romeo Tremblay was born on 30 March 1892 in Saint-Paul-du-Nord, Quebec, Canada as the youngest of ten children born to parents Francois-Xavier Tremblay and Marie Louise (née Desbiens) Tremblay. He was by far the longest-lived of his siblings, with none of his brothers or sisters reaching the age of 75.
On 14 September 1927, aged 35, Romeo married Alice Tremblay, a distant relative 15 years his junior, and had 11 children (seven daughters, four sons) with her. Tremblay’s father died in 1935 aged 87, and his mother followed two years later aged 85. Tremblay was left a widower when his wife Alice died in 1995 aged 88.
Tremblay became the oldest living man in Canada upon the death of 108-year-old James Grant of Nova Scotia on 9 April 2000, ten days after he turned 108. He would hold the title until he passed away on 17 December 2001 in Saint-Paul-du-Nord, Quebec, Canada at the age of 109 years, 262 days.
At the time of his death, Tremblay was the fifth-oldest man ever to die in Canada. He was succeeded as Canada’s oldest man by 108-year-old Raphael Cree (1893-2002).
