Rosa Julia "Chicha" Pena Hechavarria [Spanish: Rosa Julia "Chicha" Peña Hechavarría] (born 23 October 1914) is a Cuban supercentenarian who is currently the second-oldest living person in Cuba, after Angelina Nazco Pulido. Her age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Rosa Julia Pena Hechavarria was born in Puerto Padre, Las Tunas Province, Cuba on 23 October 1914. Her parents were Feliberto Peña, a farmer, and Elvira Hechavarría.
Her childhood was spent on helping her parents and eight siblings in her rural neighbourhood, which was a farming community where her extended family also resided, creating a large and united family. She disliked going to school but showed a friendly and delightful virtue; more than once, escaped to bathe in the river or feed the animals in the corral, especially the turkeys she loved to raise.
Her father was an agricultural worker where he cultured a plot of land where he grew his crops. To further nourish his family, he hunted for deer and fished for macabi. Her mother assisted in domestic work.
In 1933, she married Rubén Ricardo Cartaya and move into his home in the village of Santa Maria. They had 2 offspring, Griselda and Roberto. She was widowed in 2009, their marriage lasted for over 7 decades.
On 7 March 2021, following the death of 111-year-old Pedro Batista Layana, she became the oldest known living person in the province of Las Tunas.
On 23 October 2024, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming a supercentenarian.
Rosa Julia Pena Hechavarria currently lives in Reparto Primero, Las Tunas Province, Cuba, at the age of 111 years, 48 days.
