Biography

Rosalba Castro Bello was born on 15 February 1907 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain, as the third of seven children. Her original Christian name was Rosalia, but she was always called Rosalba, and it stuck with her in her adult life. She had three boyfriends, but never married any of them because her parents disapproved of them all. Her father was a tailor.

Even though she never married nor had children of her own, Rosalba always liked looking after her younger siblings when she was young, and her nieces and nephews when she was older. She also helped her father with his tailoring during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39. She enjoyed dancing when she was a young adult.

Two months before her 105th birthday in 2012, Rosalba moved into a nursing home. She made friends there very quickly. In her centenarian years, she spent her days eating, attending mass, watching television and chatting. She also did gymnastics occasionally, as well as going to the theatre. On her 110th birthday, she had a private celebration with about 20 relatives in attendance.

Rosalba Castro Bello died in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain on 17 July 2017 at the age of 110 years, 152 days. She was the ninth-oldest known living person in Spain at the time of her death.
