Ruth Andreasen was born as Ruth Mildred Poppen to parents John and Mary (née Johnson) Poppen in Parkersburg, Iowa, USA on 8 February 1903. She had two siblings named Margaret and Harold. At the age of six, she and her family moved to a farm in Stewartville, Minnesota. After finishing school, she helped on the family farm.

The couple became farmers and owned various farms until their retirement in 1969. James died on 4 October 1985, aged 95, after 62 years of marriage.

Ruth was a longtime member of several organisations, including the United Methodist Church in Stewartville (and it's United Methodist Women's group) and the Home Economics Club in Stewartville. She enjoyed handiwork, especially crocheting, gardening and spending time with family and friends. In November 2006, aged 103, she moved into a nursing home where she lived for the rest of her life.

In February 2013, Ruth celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
