Ruth Apilado
Unvalidated

Ruth Mosselle Apilado (née Mays; 30 April 1908 – 15 August 2021) was an American supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group.

Biography

Ruth Apilado was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA on 30 April 1908. Her mother, Clara Mays, was a homemaker, and her father, Stewart Mays, was a postal worker. After graduating from McKinley High School in 1925, Apilado attended Chicago Teachers College, where she earned her teaching certificate in 1928. She married Inosencio Apilado, who was born in the Philippines. They had one son, Myron. Their marriage lasted for over 70 years until his death in 2007 at the age of 99.

After becoming a teacher, Apilado was hired by the Chicago public schools, and she worked as an elementary school teacher until 1973. During that time, she was exposed to the world of magazine publishing, having spent 1942 as the editor of the Negro Youth Photo Scripts Magazine (NYPS). Following her retirement from the Chicago public schools, Apilado returned to the publishing world, founding America’s Intercultural Magazine (AIM), in 1973. The magazine, published quarterly, was founded to help purge racism from society and to establish a scholarship fund for underprivileged youth.

Apilado was an associate editor of AIM, and regularly contributed to the magazine into her centenarian years.

At the age of 113, it was reported her memory had started to fail and she had moved into an Assisted Living Facility outside of Seattle.

Ruth Apilado died in Federal Way, Washington at the age of 113 years, 107 days. She was the oldest known living resident of her state, and may have been the oldest living person notable for reasons other than longevity.
