Ruth Rebecca Bruce (née Oliver; 8 October 1898 – 8 April 2011) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her death, she was the oldest human in North Carolina.
Biography[]
Ruth Rebecca Oliver was born in South Carolina on 8 October 1898. She started working in the cotton fields with her father when she was just six years old. Her father lived to the age of 100 and her grandfather lived to the age of 104.
For most of her life, Bruce lived in in Anderson, South Carolina, but lived in Brooklyn, New York for a brief period in the mid-1950s when she cared for her mother. In the late 1950s, she came back to South Carolina, where she worked as a cook and housekeeper for a wealthy family. She continued working for the family until she was around 102.
After retiring, Bruce moved to Durham, North Carolina. She died on 8 April 2011 at the age of 112 years, 182 days. At the time of her death, she had six grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
