Ruth Weyl (née Markt; 6 November 1908 – 23 February 2019) was a German-born American supercentenarian of Jewish ancestry, whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group.
Biography[]
Ruth Weyl was born in Breslau, Germany (now Wroclaw, Lower Silesia, Poland) on 6 November 1908. Her parents were Heinrich Markt (born 1870) and Elsa Markt (née Bogen; born 1877). She had at least one sister, Annemarie Holz.
In 1930, she married Heinrich (later Henry) Weyl, who was also from Breslau. When the Nazis forced them to close their business on June 26, 1937, Ruth and Heinrich decided to leave the country and immigrated to Kenya, then under British rule. They first stopped in London to visit relatives and then took a boat from Southampton to Mambasa and from there to Nairobi.
The couple sailed to New York, United States on board the Queen Elizabeth I, arriving in March 1948. They lived in Astoria for 30 years until Heinrich died in 1977. A short time later, Weyl moved to Forest Hills, where she continued to lived until her death on 23 February 2019 at the age of 110 years, 109 days.
