Saara Eeva Elisabet Ahonen (née Voipalin; 24 November 1909 – 29 May 2020) was a Finnish supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She was the oldest living person in Finland at the time of her death. She also was the last surviving Finnish person confirmed to have been born in the 1900s decade.
Biography[]
Saara Ahonen was born as Saara Voipalin in Pirkkala, Pirkanmaa, Finland, on 24 November 1909 to Vilhelm Juhonpoika (1881–1942) and Eva Nieminen (1883–1964). She had two siblings: Aili Pohjo (1905–?) and Vilho Voipalin (1907–1977).
Following the death of Helfrid Eriksson on 23 October 2018, Ahonen became the oldest living person in Finland.
She celebrated her 110th birthday and therefore became a Supercentenarian on 24 November 2019.
Saara Ahonen died in Hameenlinna, Tavastia Proper, Finland, on 29 May 2020 at the age of 110 years, 187 days. After her death, Helvi Harma became the oldest living person in Finland.
Ahonen is one of only three Nordic people (all women) known to have been born in the 1900s decade and die in 2020s decade (the others are Marie Andersen of Norway (29 September 1909 – 16 February 2020) and Karla Lindholm Jensen of Denmark (7 May 1908 – 10 December 2020)).
