Samantha Nellis (née Stanton; 5 January 1810 – 17 August 1919) was an American centenarian who, at the time of her death, might have been the oldest person ever born in North America.
Biography[]
Samantha Nellis was born as Samantha Stanton in Little Falls, Herkimer, New York, United States as the youngest daughter of Revolutionary War veteran Elijah Stanton and his wife Lucy Goodell. Samantha grew up in the area and attended school in Eaton's Bush, Herkimer. She married John Dietz Nellis in Eaton's Bush on 29 September 1829. The couple remained in Herkimer for one year before moving to Belfast, Allegeny, New York. The couple ran a dairy business and raised their four children in the area, moving to Naples, Ontario, New York in 1844.
John Nellis died in 1884, after which Samantha resided with her children in Naples. She ultimately outlived all her children and resided with one of her granddaughters in Naples until she died on 17 August 1919, aged 109 years, 224 days.
