Sarah Donaldson (known as Sister Mary Aidan; 20 August 1908 – 25 October 2019) was a UK-born American supercentenarian whose age has been validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Sarah Donaldson was born in Newry, County Down, Ireland (now Northern Ireland) on 20 August 1908. She was raised by her father after her mother died young. In February 1927, she emigrated to the United States, where she settled in Mobile, Alabama. That September, she began her education ministry, which lasted for 50 years. She then transitioned into pastoral ministry, caring for those who were sick and shut-in.
Sister Mary Aidan moved to a retirement home in 1988. At the age of 89, after retiring from active ministry, Donaldson took up watercolour painting under the tutelage of a former eighth grade student. On her 95th birthday, she had an exhibit of her floral work, entitled “Praising God’s Beauty”, selling 20 of them.
Sister Mary Aidan died in Mobile, Alabama, USA, on 25 October 2019, at the age of 111 years, 66 days.
