Shigeru Nakamura [Japanese: 中村茂] (11 January 1911 – 15 November 2022) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of his death, he was the oldest known living person in Hiroshima Prefecture, as well as the oldest known living man in Japan from the death of Mikizo Ueda on 9 September 2022, until his own death on 15 November 2022. He is the 2nd oldest man ever from Hiroshima Prefecture Behind Yoshikazu Yamashita

Biography[]

Shigeru Nakamura was born in Jinsekikogen, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan on 11 January 1911.

Nakamura was exposed to the aftermath of the August 1945 bombing of Hiroshima by U.S. forces in the closing stages of World War II, after he went to help clean up rubble in the devastated city following the attack.

In January 2021, Nakamura celebrated his 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.

Following the death of 11O-year-old Toshio Katayama on 19 May 2021, Nakamura became the oldest known living man in Hiroshima Prefecture. He later became the oldest known living person in Hiroshima Prefecture, following the death of 11O-year-old Toshiko Inoue on 6 October 2021.

In September 2022, following the death of 112-year-old Mikizo Ueda, Nakamura was reported as the oldest known living man in Japan.

Shigeru Nakamura died from natural causes at a nursing home in Jinsekikogen, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, during the early hours on 15 November 2022, at the age of 111 years, 308 days. He was also among the last known surviving Japanese men to have been born during the Meiji era. A few weeks before his death, his appetite declined to the point where he would stop eating after one or two bites per meal.
