Shizuko Kiyuna was born in Chatan, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan on 10 June 1912 as the 11th and youngest child. She married at around age 18 and was blessed with three sons and one daughter.

At the age of 32, after the Battle of Okinawa, Kiyuna survived by fleeing into the mountains of the Motobu Peninsula with her husband, children, and parents-in-law. In her mid-40s, she opened a general store called "Kiyuna Shoten" in a corner of her home in Sunabe, the same village. She sold food, sweets, cigarettes, light bulbs, sandals and other daily necessities.

Kiyuna obtained her driver's license after turning 60. Just before turning 80, she began learning the koto, Ryukyu dance, and calligraphy.

Every year on Kiyuna's birthday, 50 to 60 people would gather together to celebrate her birthday, including her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and elders.

In June 2022, Kiyuna celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
