Sjul Svensson (13 December 1799 – 24 September 1902) was a Swedish centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Sweden at the time of his death. He also was the second-oldest known living person in Sweden, behind Ingrid Klar, and the last known surviving man in Sweden born in the 1700s.
Biography[]
Sjul Svensson was born on the farm in Overhogdal, Harjedalen Municipality, Jamtland County, Sweden on 13 December 1799, the son of Sven Esbjornsson and Sonne Sjulsdotter. He worked as a farmer, and the farm was eventually taken over by his older brother Esbjorn.
At the age of 17, he had made a successful horse business, on which he earned 10 riksdaler. After this he started trading in poultry, skins and butter in Stockholm, cattle in Gavle, flax in Norway, etc. Thanks to the trade, he was able to buy a home for 1,500 riksdaler in 1831.
He married Martha Larsdotter (1810–1872) on 4 April 1831. The couple had 10 children, seven of whom were alive at the time of his death.
Svensson was in Overhogdal for a period the only really literate, which made himparish printer. He also had roles as a board member and fjardingsman in Overhogdal.
On his 100th birthday in 1899, Svensson had seven children, 15 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. At that time, his eyesight and hearing were weak. He was described as happy and content, and was happy to tell about his life and his travels.
Svensson died in Overhogdal, Harjedalen Municipality, Jamtland County, Sweden on 24 September 1902 at the age of 102 years, 285 days.
