Sophia Wellstead (23 May 1851 – 7 August 1958) was a British centenarian who was the oldest known person in the United Kingdom at her death.
Biography[]
Sophia Wellstead was born on 23 May 1851 in the United Kingdom. As of her 107th birthday, she had three surviving children in addition to eight grandchildren, 133 [sic] (more likely 13) great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren. In her final years, she lived on a diet of cold meat, mashed potatoes, pickled vegetables and ice cream.
Wellstead was the oldest person in the country from 2 July 1957 (the death of 106-year-old Elizabeth Etheridge) until her own death on 7 August 1958, aged 107 years, 76 days. She was succeeded by Rhoda Harris (1851–1959).
Oldest in Britain gives her place of death as Lewes, Sussex, but her obituary in the Somerset Daily American (Pennsylvania) says she lived and died in Kingston, Dorset.
