Suekiku Miyanaga [Japanese: 宮永スエキク] (7 April 1884 – 20 June 1998) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her passing, she was the oldest living person in Japan.
Biography
Early Life
Suekiku Miyanaga was born in Osumi, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan on 7 April 1884.
In 1908, while she was in her early 20s, she married and eventually had 11 children in total (seven daughters and four sons).
Not much is known about her earlier life, but her obituary mentions her being a vegetarian. In addition, she had a passion for music and played the guitar well into her mid-centenarian years.
Later Life
In her later years, Miyanaga resided in a nursing home in Osumi Province in the Southeast part of Kagoshima Prefecture. On 5 May 1997, she became the oldest living Japanese person after the death of Sue Utagawa.
Suekiku Miyanaga died in a hospital in Osumi, Kagoshima, Japan on 20 June 1998 at the age of 114 years, 74 days. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest living validated person in the world, after Sarah Knauss. Only two of her children were still alive after her death. She was the oldest validated person ever from Kagoshima Prefecture, until Nabi Tajima surpassed her age on 18 October 2014.
