Sugar Pryor (née Johnson; 14 June 1909 – 13 May 2018) was an American centenarian who was one of the oldest living people in Georgia at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Sugar Pryor was born in Bulloch County, Georgia, United States on 14 June 1909. Her parents were Joe and Jimmie Ann Johnson. She attended the public schools of Bulloch County and at a young age she served for many years at Lakeside First Baptist Church in Metter. After moving to Statesboro with her husband, Buford Pryor, she joined Noah’s Ark Baptist Church. She held several offices in the church and she was very active there until she was no longer able to attend.
Pryor worked very hard throughout her life. She grew and preserved much of the food that she fed her family. For 44 years, she was one of the main organizers of her annual family reunion. In 2012, at 103 years of age, Pryor proudly became a registered voter for the first time in her life.
Sugar Pryor died in Heritage Inn Health and Rehabilitation Center in Statesboro, Georgia, United States on 13 May 2018 at the age of 108 years and 333 days. She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Cornelius and Buford, Jr.; one daughter, Alma Ruth and nine grandchildren. At the time of her death she had thirty-nine great-grandchildren, fifty-eight great-great grandchildren and six great-great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Pryor was instrumental in rearing the Nesmith children of Bulloch County and she considered them a part of her family.
