Susan Keane (née Hughes; 14 October 1912 – 22 October 2023) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023. At the time of her death, she was the oldest known person living in the U.S. state of New Jersey, and possibly the oldest known living Irish woman in the world.
Biography[]
Susan Keane was born in Long Island City, New York, USA on 14 October 1912 to Irish immigrants, John and Mary Hughes. She had a twin sister, Mary, and a younger sister, Cecilia. She married her husband Peter in 1948, and they moved to Allendale, New Jersey in 1960. She and her husband Peter, who died in 2008, had two children: Susan Keane Vogel and Peter K. Keane.
In October 2022, Keane celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian. Her birthday was celebrated with officers of the Allendale Police Department.
Following the death of 111-year-old Genevieve Pilot on 20 March 2023, Keane became the oldest known living person in New Jersey.
Susan Keane died in Allendale, New Jersey, USA on 22 October 2023 at the age of 111 years, 8 days. Following her death, then-110-year-old Launa Mitchell became the oldest known living person in New Jersey.
