Taib Alihodzic [Montenegrin: Taib Alihodžić, Montenegrin Cyrillic: Таиб Алихоџић] (6 August 1902 – 31 August 2009) was a Montenegrin centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Montenegro at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Taib Alihodžić was born in the mountain village of Korita, Bijelo Polje Municipality, Principality of Montenegro (now Montenegro), on 6 August 1902 (claimed 1901). His father, Ali-Efendija, was a religious teacher in the village of Tomaševo, and had two wives and 21 children with them, of whom Taib was the youngest.
As a very young man, he did almost all agricultural work, looked after livestock, and "along with work" he attended a religious school in his village for three years, so that then he mastered the Arabic alphabet, the Bosnian alphabet, and "Bosnian ilmihal" by heart. The desire to become a "real hodja" awakened in him, and at the time of the formation of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, he enrolled in the Royal Madrasa in Bijelo Polje, later traveled to Đakovica, and then to Novi Pazar with Ismail Efendija. The political climate at the time meant that his religious education lasted almost nine years, but he still completed four grades of elementary school in Serbian at the same time.
In 1932 and 1933, he served in the army, in a barracks that was financially supported by the then Romanian King Carol II, King Alexander's father-in-law. Since he was a good soldier, the High Command promoted him first to corporal trainee, and later to company commander, and he was repeatedly called up to the military reserve until the Army of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia capitulated.
At some point, he married, and had five sons and three daughters. His wife died in the mid-1980s. In addition to all his responsibilities at home, he managed to simultaneously perform the duties of imam in the local mosque for more than a decade, but the burden of years forced him to move to Bijelo Polje, at the age of 100, to live with his daughter Sadika.
On 1 July 2007, following the death of 107-year-old Dušan Stojović, he became the oldest known living man and person in Montenegro.
Taib Alihodžić died in Bijelo Polje, Bijelo Polje Municipality, Montenegro, on 31 August 2009, at the age of 107 years, 25 days. Following his death, then 106-year-old Fahrija Mučić became the oldest known living person in Montenegro, and then 102-year-old Krsto Vojvodić became the oldest known living man in Montenegro.
