Teimuraz Vanacha (1868/1872? – 1984) was a Georgian supercentenarian claimant.

Biography[]

Teimuraz Vanacha was born in Russian Empire (now Georgia) in either 1872, as he claimed in a 1977 Dannon yogurt commercial in Abkhazia, Georgia, or 1868 in all other sources.

He had at least one son: Ivan Temurazovich Vanacha (1921–1993), who was a veteran of World War II and a full cavalier of the Orden of Glory.

He was a veteran of World War 1 and the Russian Civil War, rider of of the Caucasian Native Cavalry Division and a recipient of the Cross of Saint George. After the start of the Great Patriotic War at the age of 73 or 69, he asked to enroll himself in the active army, but was refused.

In 1975, he together with his son Ivan, met with Konstantin Simonov during his trip to Abkhazia as part of the filming of the film "A soldier was walking" [Russian: Шёл солдат] based on the book of the same name.

In 1977, together with other long-livers, he became known to American TV viewers thanks to his participation in an advertisement for the Dannon company, shot in the USSR as part of the campaign “ In Soviet Georgia”, which described the properties of yoghurt and stated that it was thanks to its use that he lived to be 105.

In May 1982, a photograph of Ivan Vanachi with his son Ivan was placed on the cover of Smena magazine under the title "Cavaliers of the highest soldier orders, father and son of Vanachi from the village of Lykhny, Gudauta region of Abkhazia" by Lev Sherstennikov.

Despite his age advanced, he participated in horse races, was a member of the musical ensemble of long-livers "Narta", and also took part in cleaning tea plantations.

Teimuraz Vanacha died in Abkhazia, Georgia in 1984 at the claimed age of 116/112 years.
