Therese Zelie Stewart (née de Souza; 26 August 1914 – 9 September 2018) was a Singaporean centenarian and a prominent member of the Eurasian community in the country.
Biography[]
Therese Zelie Stewart was born on 26 August 1914 in Singapore.
Therese grew up in Queen Street, one of the earliest enclaves of Eurasians in the colonial days. Her family home was in a row of six townhouses between St Peter and Paul Church and the Portuguese Church House.
Therese Stewart married Stanley Toft Stewart PJG on 26 October 1935 at Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. They had seven daughters together. Stanley was Singapore's first high commissioner to Australia and later became the head of Singapore's civil service.
Stewart was featured in a number of Facebook posts made by Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, whom she has known since he was about seven years old.
Therese Stewart died in Singapore on 9 September 2018, aged 104 years, 14 days. Since 2017, she has been believed to be Singapore's oldest Eurasian.
