Biography[]

Theresia Staffler was born in Ulten, Austria-Hungary, a commune located in South Tirol, on 15 November 1898. In 1918, the town became part of Italy and it has been known as Ultimo ever since. Mrs. Staffler-Breitenberger lived in a nursing home in Santa Valpurga in Val d'Ultimo, where she had moved to the age of 100. Reportedly, her advice for a long, good life included staying active, praying, going to Mass on Sunday, working with zeal and drinking a glass of wine or grappa along with a good meal. Mrs. Staffler-Breitenberger used to go to country festivals and village festivals where healthy eating, singing, laughing and joking between friends represented rules of happy living for her.

Theresia Staffler-Breitenberger died in Ultimo, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy, on 11 January 2010, aged 111 years, 57 days. At the time of her death she had two living daughters, aged 88 and 85, as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the fourth oldest living person in Italy at that time.
