Thomas Evans Riddle (16 April 1846? - 2 April 1954) was an American centenarian who may have been the last surviving veteran of the American Civil War to have seen combat.
Biography
Thomas Riddle was born on 16 April 1846 on a farm outside Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee, to Samuel B. Riddle and an unknown mother. His mother died when he was only six weeks old, and Samuel remarried to Mahalia Brown. He enlisted in the 22nd Virginia Infantry in early 1863, and saw combat at Gettysburg. After the war, he married several times, first to Clarisa Ann Keelin on 19 July 1885, then to Annie Essie on 4 September 1938, and lastly to Shrilda Leptwich in October 1940.
Riddle had a tendency to tell tales, such as that he "buried all 13 of the dead at Gettysburg". He was a half-brother of noted sportsman Samuel Doyle Riddle.[1]
Thomas Riddle died in the Texas Confederate Home for Men on 2 April 1954, aged 107 years, 351 days[2].
