Biography[]

Tripolino Giannini was born in Cecina, Tuscany, Italy on 20 August 1912, to Raffaello "Fello" Giannini and his wife Amina. His name, Tripolino, was chosen in honor of the Libyan capital Tripoli, which at the time had just been conquered by the Italians.

In 1929, at the age of 17, he participated in the first race of the Targa Cecina, finishing fourth. Giannini has always been a lover of sports, and he was also a runner and football coach.

In the 1930s he married a woman named Tosca (born in 1912), with whom he had two children: Romano (aged 88 in 2023) and Sergio (died 2004).

From 1939 to 1943 he fought in the Second World War in the Bersaglieri Corps, taking part in the Albanian campaign. When Italy signed the armistice on 8 September 1943, Giannini was in France and was forced to return to Cecina on foot, taking three months. Given the situation in Italy (divided between the Allies and the Nazis), he hid in the countryside and once the war was over he returned to work on the family farm, growing vegetables that they would later resell. He then ran a fruit and vegetable shop in the town centre.

On the night of 11 July 1982, during the final of the soccer World Cup (won by Italy), Giannini's wife died, due to her poor health. Here Giannini opened up and told his son about his life for the first time.

During his centenarian years, Giannini was in good health. He continued to drive until he was 102, after which he went out every day to go to the bar with friends. He was also still able to remember all the multiplication tables.

On 18 April 2021, at the age of 108, he received his second dose of the Pfizer–BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, making him one of the oldest people to receive the vaccine. As of August 2021, he had five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

In August 2022, he celebrated his 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian. At the age of 111, he was still able to walk and was in good health.

Tripolino Giannini died at 9.30 a.m. on 31 December 2023, at the age of 111 years, 133 days, after a few days of not being well.
