Trudie Ethel Martin (née Tilley; 19 October 1901 – 27 July 2012) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Trudie Martin was born on a farm in Stokes County, North Carolina, USA on 19 October 1901, the ninth of 11 children of James Tilley and Susan (née Robertson) Tilley.
She quit school in the eighth grade because if she went further, she had to leave home. She worked on the family farm for a few years.
When her older sister moved to Winston-Salem, she told Martin that she wanted her to come here to live with her. Their parents agreed and Martin got a job at Hanes Hosiery Mill as a looper, the person who looped the toes onto stockings.
She bought a car at the age of 17. She drove back to Stokes County each weekend to see her parents and take them to the store and church.
At the age of 30, she married Ronald Martin. The couple had one daughter: Sue Wright (born c.1943). After her daughter got married, the family built a larger house so they could all live together. She took care of grandchildren while her daughter worked.
Ronald died in 1967 at the age of 71. Her last sibling Maggie Simmons-Tilley died in 1991 at the age of 94.
She gave up driving at the age of 92. At the age of 106, she got a passport and flew to Grand Cayman Island for the wedding of her great-granddaughter. She was member of Calvary Baptist Church. She lived with her daughter at their home.
Trudie Martin died in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA on 27 July 2012 at the age of 110 years, 282 days. She was survived by one daughter Sue Wright; three grandchildren Teresa Conrad and husband Jay, Lanett Trautner and husband Jeff, and Ronald Wright and wife Rita; six great-grandchildren Amber Dietz and husband Scott, Erin and Sean Trautner, Amanda Carpenter, and Jessica and Ronnie Wright; one great-great-granddaughter Hannah Dietz; and many nieces, and nephews.
