Tsuru Kobayashi (Japanese: 小林ツル; 23 August 1900 – 7 January 2011) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is validated by Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Kobayashi was born in Tachibana (present-day Aoma in the city of Tonosho), Chiba Prefecture, Japan, on 23 August 1900. She was born as the second of 7 siblings. She got married in Aoma and had 5 children with her husband. They raised the children while farming. She had 11 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Her husband died at the age of 80. One of her sons died in World War II, and one died of illness. Her second daughter died in January 2008, at the age of 83. In 2008, she lived with her grandson, Akemi Ishikawa (then 55-years-old).

When asked about the secret of her longevity, she said: "Don't be afraid, move your body" and "Live a regular life". Her age was verified by Japan’s MHLW and Tim Green, and validated by the GRG on 16 February 2011. At the time of death, she was the second-oldest living person in Chiba Prefecture, behind Toshi Higano.

Kobayashi died of natural causes in Ouma, Tonosho, Chiba Prefecture, Japan, on 7 January 2011, at the age of 110 years, 137 days.
