Vaino Loisa [Finnish: Väinö Loisa] (26 July 1912 – 10 August 2020) was a Finnish centenarian who was the oldest living man in Finland at time of his death.

Biography[]

Vaino Loisa was born in Savitaipale, South Karelia, Russian Empire (present-day Finland), on 26 July 1912 as the youngest child in the family. For some time, he worked in a forest with his father and brothers. During the first 20 years of his life, he lived in many different places. Loisa did military service between 1933 and 1934. In 1935, he moved to Nuppola with his parents and brother Ensio, empty-handed, with no tools or animals. Loisa later raised his own children there.

In 1937, he met his future wife, Rauha, on the winter dance in Askola. Their wedding was interrupted by The Winter War (1939–1940). Later, the wedding was arranged for December 1940, and they got married in Luumaki on 15 December. His first child was a son (born in 1942). He also had two daughters. Loisa was forced to participate in the Continuation War. His father died at the age of 80 in 1956, and his mother died at the age of 86 in 1962. After his retirement, he started with woodworking. He built an indoor sauna at the age of 95.

At the age of 103, he said: “Respect your dad and your mom so you can live long and prosper”. At that time, his two daughters lived in Lappeenranta.

After the death of Kalle Rahomaki on 14 October 2017, he became the oldest (known) living man born in Finland. After the death of Otto Auloste on 25 October 2018, he became the oldest man alive in Finland. He is among the 10 oldest Finnish men ever.

Vaino Loisa died in the village of Nuppola in the municipality of Luumaki, South Karelia, Finland on 10 August 2020 at the age of 108 years, 15 days. Reportedly, he had three children, six grandchildren and "a number of" great-grandchildren at the time.
