Valdemar Prukner (2 May 1915 – April 2023) was a Croatian-German centenarian who was the oldest known living man born in Croatia and the third-oldest known living man in Germany and also was the oldest known living violinist in Europe at the time of his death.

Biography[]

Valdemar Prukner was born in Rijeka, Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, Austria-Hungary (present-day Croatia) on 2 May 1915 as the son of a Croatian father and an Italian mother. He grew up in Zagreb and started playing the violin at the age of 6. Prukner graduated from high school and attended the Music Academy in Zagreb.

He performed playing the violin in many countries and met many celebrities like Sophia Loren. During more than 20 years, Prukner performed regularly at the casino in Travemunde, he met his wife Hildegard. His wife died in the late 2010s.

After the death of his wife, he started dating Marianne Schalk (aged 90 in April 2023).

He became the oldest known living man born in Croatia, following the death of 109-year-old Josip Krsul on 5 March 2021.

Prukner died in Travemunde, Lubeck, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany in April 2023 at the age of 107 years, 334-363 days. He was the oldest known living man in Schleswig-Holstein, and the third-oldest known living man in Germany (behind Karlheinz Stauber and Walter Franz) at the time of his death.
