Vasile Stamateanu [Romanian: Stămăteanu] (2 February 1912 – 28 December 2020) was a Romanian centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Romania from the death of Dumitru Comanescu on 27 June 2020, until his own death. He was also the oldest living veteran in Romania, having fought in Eastern Front during the World War II.
Biography[]
Captain (rtr.) Vasile Stamateanu was born in Fantanele, Botosani district (present-day Suceava district), Romania on 2 February 1912.
On 12 March 1942, he was mobilized in the 53rd Infantry Regiment, with which he participated in the fighting on the Eastern Front, reaching Odessa. After 1 April 1944, he took part, with the 25th Infantry Regiment, in the fighting on the Crimean peninsula. Captain Stamateanu was part of the "Victim Squad" of the Romanian army. The hospital was in charge of blasting and clearing the battlefield because it was in constant danger.
The war separated him from his comrades. He stayed away from other soldiers for weeks after being captured by the Soviet army. He hid in a woman's house and survived on the little food she gave him. He was trying all the time to track down his friends.
Along with other war veterans, Captain Stamateanu was celebrated by soldiers of the 15th Mechanized Brigade "High Bridge" from Iasi. The action was carried out in cooperation with the Association "Charm of Life" on the occasion of marking the Day of Fighters. There were about 80 veterans in the district who fought on the front lines of World War II.
Stamateanu died in Iasi district, Romania, on 28 December 2020, at the age of 108 years, 329 days.
