Biography
Vera Schrauth grew up in New York City with three siblings, all much older than her. Her parents ran an ice cream and sweet shop in Newburgh and then opened a second one in Poughkeepsie. She married Thurlow Van Wagner in 1933. The couple had no children.
Vera loved playing the piano, gardening, and nursing sick birds back to health and caring for her own cockatiel Peewee. Thurlow died at age 95 in 1997. She stayed in their home with care until 2011, when she moved to the Baptist Home.
Van Wagner became the oldest recognised living person in the state of New York upon the death of Susannah Mushatt Jones, who was the world's oldest validated living person.[1]
