Violet Smith (née Plaga; 7 April 1902 – 29 August 2012) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Violet Smith was born in Saginaw, Michigan, USA on 7 April 1902. Her parents were Robert and Mary (née Schwan) Plaga. She had four siblings. She attended Eastern Michigan University to become a teacher.
She married Louis Smith in 1930. The couple had three children: Robert Smith (now deceased), Richard Smith and Marjorie Williams. She moved to Lansing to teach kindergarten, and then Detroit. She got widowed in 1976.
She moved to King’s Daughters Home in 1997. In 2011 at the age of 109 years, she threw out the first pitch at the Great Lakes Loons opening day baseball game.
One of her siblings Myrtle Plaga (1893–1996) lived to be 102.
Violet Smith died in Midland, Michigan, USA on 29 August 2012 at the age of 110 years, 144 days. She is survived by one son Richard Smith; one daughter Marjorie Williams; five grandchildren: Sharon Smith, Karen Rafferty, Steve Williams, Julie Williams and Anne Wind; seven great-grandchildren: Tori, Ellie, Keeton, Jayci, Ripley, Allie and Anna.
