Biography[]
Virginia Muise was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, on 28 July 1893. The family claimed she was born on 27 July, though her baptismal record gives her date of birth as 28 July.
She was the age of 19 when the Titanic sank, and remembered the survivors and the coffins of the victims being disembarked at the port in Halifax. After her family moved to Boston in 1923, Muise worked as a housekeeper and cook. She was manager of the cafeteria at the former Boston "Lying-In Hospital" until her retirement.
She was also a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, and the staff of the nursing home where she lived reported her delight at the team winning the 2004 World Series.
A widow, Muise was survived by four children, 18 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. In 2003, New Hampshire Governor Craig Benson proclaimed 27 July "Virginia Muise Day."
At the time of her death, she was probably the oldest living person in New England.
Muise died in Haverhill, New Hampshire, USA, on 2 November 2004 at the age of 111 years, 97 days (claimed 111 years, 98 days).
