Centenarian |
Walter Muller [German: Müller] (21 June 1914 – 26 May 2022) was a Swiss centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Switzerland at the time of his death. However, he was not the oldest living Swiss-born man as Maurice Butty of France is older.
Biography[]
Walter Muller was born in Wiedikon, Zurich, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland on 21 June 1914.
He married Gertud Fehr, the daughter of a well-known baker in the city, and had two children with her (Walter born in 1950 and Christina born in 1954), according to official records.
Muller worked as a precision mechanic, and during the crisis of the 1930s he sometimes worked in construction. Later he got a job at Contraves (owned by Emil Bührle) and then rose to the top of the company's management. Finally, at 65, he had enough and retired. In about 2008, he moved with his wife Gertrud to what is now the Tiergarten retirement and nursing home in Wiedikon, not only because the couple was getting older, but also because the new Credit Suisse building in front of his house took away the view of the Alps that he could admire from his flat.
His wife died in December 2017 at the age of 91.
He became the oldest known living man in Switzerland and the oldest known living person in Zurich, following the death of 109-year-old Alfred Ziegler on 12 March 2022.
Muller died in Zurich, Canton of Zurich, Switzerland on 26 May 2022 at the age of 107 years, 341 days. At the time of his death, he was the oldest known living person in Zurich.
