Willem van Renterghem (6 December 1782 – 24 October 1888) was a Belgian centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Europe at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Willem van Renterghem was born in Bruges, West Flanders, Austrian Netherlands (now Belgium) on 6 December 1782 (9 December according to Oldest in Britain). At the age of 17, he moved to Ruddervoorde and married Marie De Meulenaere in 1813. The couple had five children.
Willem van Renterghem died of a stroke in Ruddervoorde, Oostkamp, West Flanders, Belgium on 24 October 1888 at the age of 105 years, 323 days (105 years, 320 days according to Oldest in Britain). He was survived by one son and one daughter. Following his death, then-105-year-old Marie d'Evergroote became the oldest known living person in Europe.
