William "Bill" Del Monte (22 January 1906 – 11 January 2016) was an American centenarian who was the last known survivor of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake.
Biography[]
Del Monte was three months old at the time the earthquake struck on 18 April 1906. According to what his family told him, his mother wrapped him up in a tablecloth and fled the house along with his father and four siblings, and they escaped in a horse-drawn cart with fire burning around them.[1]
In the 1920s, Del Monte became a stockbroker. He was worth $1 million by the age of 23, but lost all his money in the crash of 1929. He married his wife, Vera, in 1935, and the couple were married for over 55 years until she died in 1991.[2]
Del Monte became the last known survivor of the 1906 earthquake following the death of Katherine Gomery on 27 December 2015. He died in Marin County, California, on 11 January 2016, eleven days shy of his 110th birthday.
