William Isaac Rhymer (9 November 1916 – 23 October 2021) was centenarian who is currently the oldest known man ever in British Virgin Islands. He was also the oldest known living person in British Virgin Islands at time of his death.
Biography[]
William Rhymer was born in Johnny Hill, Tortola, British Virgin Islands on 9 November 1916. His parents were Henry and Jane Eliza "Burbel" Rhymer. He was educated at the Cane Garden Bay Methodist Church Schools. He worked as farmer, sailor, road warden and boat racer.
He married Josephine Nibbs (born 5 November 1919) at Road Town Methodist Church on 25 September 1940. The couple had 10 children: Allan, Dennis, Joseph, Henry, Joyce, Shirley, William Jr, Elroy, Janet and Violet.
On the couple’s 70th and 75th wedding anniversary, the Queen Elizabeth II sent them royal mail. Josephine Rhymer died on 12 April 2017 at the age of 97, after 76 years of marriage. The couple were regarded as the oldest couple alive in the Virgin Islands and the longest married.
Rhymer was the grandfather of Honourables Kye M. Rymer, the Minister of Transportation, Works and Utilities and Sharie D. de Castro, the Junior Minister for Tourism. He was also a relative to Honourables Melvin M. Turnbull.
At the age of 104, he was completely blind, but still lucid.
On 19 March 2021 at the age of 104 years, 129 days, he surpassed the age of William Industrious, becoming the oldest known man ever from British Virgin Islands.
Rhymer died in Tortola, British Virgin Islands on 23 October 2021 at the age of 104 years, 348 days. At the time of his death, he was survived by his 10 children, 31 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
