Biography[]

Early Life[]

Yang Changzhi claimed to have been born in Anyue County, Sichuan, Qing dynasty (China) on 29 January 1902.

At the age of 4, Yang was sold to a landlord with the family name Duan by her father, who fled the famine. She was married (as a child bride) to Duan Xingfa [Chinese: 段兴发] (born 1897; originally with the family name Zhao), who was a cattle herder working for the same landlord than her.

The couple spent his childhood in the barn of the landlord. Later, they had 9 children, including Duan Haiqing [Chinese: 段海清] (almost aged 80 in 2010). Four were surviving as of 2017.

Yang used to work all her life. She said: "I got used to doing work in the fields all my life. If I do nothing in the fields during one day, I feel ill."

Later Life[]

Yang's husband died in 1996. She lived alone without assistance until 2009, at the claimed age of 107, when she moved with her four surviving children.

In January 2010, at the claimed age of 107 (almost 108), Yang was still able to work in the fields, and was reported to have grown three new teeth. At the claimed age of 108, she celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival with her family.

At the claimed age of 110, she was still able to do needlework. On sunny days, she would still go out and clean up weeds. At the claimed age of 114, she was still able to walk with no help.

Yang Changzhi died after not eating for seven days in Danan Village, Nandajie Subdistrict, Yongchuan District, Chongqing, China on 11 January 2017, at the claimed age of 114 years, 348 days.

Potential Longevity Records[]

If validated, she would have been the sixth-oldest living person in the world, after Emma Morano, Violet Brown, Nabi Tajima, Chiyo Miyako, and Ana Vela-Rubio.

She would also have been the third-oldest living person in Asia, after Nabi Tajima and Chiyo Miyako. Next to Yukie Hino, she would have been the penultimate person in Asia born in 1902.
