Centenarian

Yang Deying [Chinese: 杨德英] (1 November 1909 – fl.7 January 2019) was a Chinese centenarian.

Biography[]

Yang Deying was born in Qing dynasty (China) on 1 November 1909. She had six siblings; four are deceased as of 2017. Her surviving sister, Yang Dezhen [Chinese: 杨德珍], was born on 17 October 1921.

The two sisters married two brothers of the Gu [Chinese: 顾] family. Yang Deying had three sons and three daughters; they gave her grandchildren (the younger being Gu Hua [Chinese: 顾华] (aged 45 in 2017)), great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren (the oldest aged 18 in 2017).

Yang cleaned her house on her own until the age of 103, and worked in the fields until the age of 106. At that age, she was reported to be lucid and physically strong. She was living with five generations under the same roof, and with her sister's fourth generation. She leads a calm and regular life, and eats vegetarian meals three times a day: "The farm's food, what you cultivate and eat all the year, don't be difficult eaters."

In September 2017, Yang's eyesight had deteriorated, so she stopped playing cards; but she still had good hearing. According to her son Gu Wenbin [Chinese: 顾文斌], the secret of her longevity was her good heart, drinking tea and eating rice, going to bed at 7 p.m. and waking up at 4 a.m, and a life of dogged work.

On her 108th birthday in 2017, Yang was reported to be able to do little chores. One of her favourites hobbies was playing cards. She said: "I'm not deaf, and I've good hands and feet, but my eyes are foggy. It's been a while since I haven't drawn a card."

In January 2019, at the age of 109, Yang was reported to be the oldest living person in Rugao County, Nantong; her predecessor, She Wenfu, went to limbo.

Yang was last confirmed alive in Taoyuan Village, Xiayuan Town, Rugao County, Nantong, Jiangsu, China on 7 January 2019, at the age of 109 years, 67 days. In January 2020, she went to limbo, since the oldest living person in Rugao County, Nantong was reported to be Liu Jigui.
