Yoshigiku Ito (Japanese: 伊都ヨシギク; 3 August 1856 – 26 November 1966) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of death, she was the world's oldest living woman.

Biography

Yoshigiku Ito was born in Japan on 3 August 1856. At the age of 100, she lost her eyesight and couldn’t hear very well. At the age of 102 or 103, she became bedridden and remained that way for the rest of her life. At the age of 108, she had 3 living daughters, 23 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. On 21 May 1964, she became the oldest (known) living person in Japan, following the death of Ishi Hayashi. On 10 January 1966, she became the world's oldest living woman, following the death of Hannah Smith.

Ito died in Iwade, Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, on 26 November 1966, at the age of 110. At the time of her death she was the world's oldest living woman. She was succeeded as the world's oldest living woman by Johanna Booysen. She remained the Japanese recordholder until Mito Umeta surpassed her age in 1973.
