At the time he went to limbo, he was the oldest living man in Taiwan according to the Taiwanese government.

Biography[]

Zhang Deshan claimed to have been born in Qingdao, Shandong Province, Qing dynasty (China) in 1909. At some point in his life, he emigrated to Taiwan and lived in the county of Miaoli.

In October 2012, Zhang was visited by Miaoli County magistrate Liu Cheng-hung. In October 2018, he was reported to be the oldest living person (and man) in Miaoli County. In 2019, he celebrated his claimed 110th birthday.

In October 2021, Zhang was reported as being one of the two men in Taiwan aged 112 (the age of the oldest living man in Taiwan at that time[1]). At that time, he was still able to walk with the aid of a walker and was in good health. He was still eating one can (in average) of raw chili peppers each week, as he enjoyed spicy food.

Zhang Deshan was last confirmed alive in Gongguan, Miaoli County, Taiwan on 30 September 2022, at the claimed age of 112/113 years. At that time, he was reported as the oldest living man in Taiwan. In October 2023, he went to limbo, as 107-year-old Lai Akang was reported as the oldest living man in Miaoli County.

A report in October 2022 says that he died in the preceding month as he did not appear in the census taken on 1 October 2022[2] ; his death date may be 25 September 2022[3].
