Zhiya Ben Mames (1 January/13 April 1912 – c.29 June 2021) was a French Tunisian-born Israeli centenarian who was one of the oldest known living people in Israel at time of her death. She was also the oldest known living person born in present-day Tunisia and the oldest known living person in Central District.
Biography[]
Zhiya Ben Mames was born in French Tunisia (present-day Tunisia) between 1 January and 13 April 1912. She emigrated to Israel in 1956. She married Uzifa Ben Mames and had five children.
Her grandson, Israel Ben Mems (born 1957) is a former footballer.
On the occasion of her 100th birthday in 2012, a representative of the National Insurance Institute surprised her at her home and gave her a 100-year certificate.
In April 2021 during the Israeli's Independence Day ceremonies, she was honored with lighting one of the torches in celebration of the day.
Ben Mames died in Lod, Central District, Israel around 29 June 2021 at the age of at least 109 years, 77 days. Following her death, then-108-year-old Rebecca Asher became the the oldest known living person in Central District.
