Biography[]

Early Life[]

Zhong Hesheng claimed to have been born in Liuyang City, Changsha, Hunan, Qing dynasty (China) on 21 December 1899. When he was young, he married Lai Fenglan [Chinese: 赖风兰], but they never had children. Instead, they adopted 2-year-old Zhong Mianyi [Chinese: 钟勉怡] (aged 63 in 2008), a child of their village.

Zhong tell that during the Second Sino-Japanese War, he walked more than 100 miles each times to have potatoes in a silk situated in Jiangxi Province (which is at the east of Hunan Province).

Zhong won his life with pork breeding. His wife died in 1958.

Later Life[]

In 2006, Zheng was reported to be in the top ten of oldest living people in Hunan Province. He lived in Xintai Community, Xincun Village, Yonghe Town, Liuyang City, Changsha, Hunan, China.

On the morning of 4 September 2008, aged 108, Zheng was visited by doctors of Mawangdui Hospital. They diagnosed him hypertension, coronary artery disease and hearing loss, but he was generally in good health; then, they offered him mooncakes. At the time, he was able to walk with a cane, and to dress up and wash his face every day. His family, composed of four generations, counted 26 people. According to his about-30-year-old grandson Zhong Zhuyi [Chinese: 钟竹义], he smokes a cigarette every day. His family claimed familial harmony as his secret of longevity. Zhong likes walking, and eats two meals a day (generally rice bowls). He goes to bed before 8 p.m.

In October 2010, Zhong was reported as the oldest living man in Hunan, and the fifth-oldest living person in Hunan, after 117-year-old Tian Longyu, 112-year-old Yu Chunjiao, 111-year-old Wu Xizhen and 111 year-old Hou Manjin.

On 5 March 2011, Zhong was admitted at hospital due to cough. He died the following day, at 0:30 p.m., in Changsha, Hunan, China, at the age of 111 years, 75 days. The cause of death was a pulmonary infection caused by a cold, in addition of pulmonar and renal failure.

Potential Longevity Records[]

He was the seventh-oldest known living person in China at the time of his death (eighth if counting Luo Mienan from Bama County).

If validated, Hesheng would have been the third-oldest living man in the world, after Walter Breuning and Jiroemon Kimura.

Hesheng would also have been the only male supercentenarian born in 1899 to have reached age 111, and the last surviving man born in 1899, having survived verified Hilliard Hudson and pending Michael DeSantis.
