Centenarian

Zivan Popovic [Serbian: Живан Поповић] (30 January 1917 – 12 January 2024) was a Serbian centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Serbia at the time of his death. He was also the second-oldest known living person in Serbia, behind Milka Baukovic and the third-oldest known living man in the Balkans, behind Ilie Ciocan and Iosif Rus.

Biography[]

Zivan Popovic was born in the village of Latvica, municipality of Arilje, Zlatibor District, Austria-Hungary (present-day Serbia) on 30 January 1917. Until the age of 20, he tended cattle, then he joined the king’s army, and remained there longer. Then there was the war II.

He was married twice, once in 1937, the second time in 1951. His first wife died in 1950, with whom he had five children, his second wife died in 2004, with whom he had two daughters. When he was 103, he had a total of 11 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren, then six of his children were still alive.

His recipe for longevity is to be moderate in everything and be resourceful. He showed resourcefulness when, as a young man, he managed to escape from a military hospital and walk through occupied Serbia from Skoplje to his village of Latvica. He was also mobilized into the Chetniks, then into the Partisans. And when he was demobilized, he devoted himself to agriculture, built a house in Latvica and acquired the largest living capital, which is a family.

He became known to the public for the fact that at the age of 101 he was still engaged in hunting, at that time he was the oldest active hunter in Serbia and Europe.

He became the oldest living man in Serbia, following the death of 107-year-old Simo Ivosevic on 22 October 2022. After the death of 109-year-old Bedriska Adamickova of the Czech Republic on 1 September 2023, he became the oldest known living Serbian-born person.

Zivan Popovic died in the mountain village of Latvica, municipality of Arilje, Zlatibor District, Serbia on 12 January 2024 at the age of 106 years, 347 days. Following his death, then 104-year-old Zivorad Markovic of Belgrade became the oldest known living man in Serbia.
