Zoraida Ormaeche Rojas (23 February 1901 – 2 November 2011) was a Peruvian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Latin American Supercentenarians (LAS) and recognized by LongeviQuest (LQ).
Biography[]
Maria Zoraida was born in Callao, Peru on 23 February 1901 to Domingo Ormaeche and Ynocenta Rojas. She was baptized on 2 March 1901. She had a twin brother, Pedro Carlos Ormaeche.
In her youth, she studied to be a telegraphist, but never practiced such a profession. She married Benjamin Carlos Nugent in Lima, Peru on 11 December 1919. They had seven children.
She remarried Francisco Irala Ojeda on 13 October 1969. They did not have any children.
She dedicated her life to caring for her children. She never had any serious illness, only a slight hearing problem. Her daughter, also called Zoraida, was in charge of taking care of her in the last 20 years of her life.
On her 100th birthday in 2001, the family threw her a big party that included a religious ceremony.
On her 110th birthday in 2011, she was visited by her seven children, 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Ormaeche Rojas died in San Borja, Lima, Peru on 2 November 2011 at the age of 110 years, 252 days. Her age was validated by the LAS in January 2020, becoming the first validated supercentenarian who died in Peru.
